Congratulations to Autumn Lane Elementary School Library –
the 2012 RRLC School Library of the Year!
Energy abounds at Autumn Lane Elementary School Library – winner of the RRLC 2012 School Library of the Year. When RRLC visited to congratulate librarian Kate McKee Boggs, her second grade class was busy using Microsoft Publisher to create a “kids level” brochure for the Susan B. Anthony House. Before class ended, they had “choice time” – time to pick two books to checkout.
The second-graders went out one door and the first-graders come in another! They too had computer time, but also story time – hearing the wolf’s version of “Three Little Pigs”! Kate “interviewed” the “pigs” and the “wolf” (audience volunteers – everyone wanted to do it) and discussed “point of view”. All this followed by some work with the SmartBoard, and then “choice time” at class end, as well as time to read on the “reading rug”.
It was a busy non-stop two hours. And it was clear the students loved the library – and the librarian!
Their Library of the Year nominations reflected this. Each of the 115 nominations was different. Each student had found his or her book, thanks to “Mrs. Boggs”. Each student gave the judges many reasons to choose their library. One of our favorites -- Elliot, a second grader:
I think Autumn Lane Library is awesome because it’s got eleven thousand books! It’s got books about star wars, pet books, all kinds of books. The books I love here are star wars, monster trucks and pets. So this means you should try to persuade your mother to bring you here!
