Morning Session: Better than Free: Libraries in the Age of Google, or Not… Where are libraries going in the 21st century? Can they - or should they - compete with the pervasiveness of Google? Or is there, perhaps, a somewhat different role for libraries in today's information-rich world? Join us for a visit with David W. Lewis, and explore the answers to some of these questions. Lewis is a nationally recognized authority on library and research issues. His talk will offer a fascinating roadmap for libraries seeking to negotiate the effects of the information revolution on research organizations.
Following David's talk there will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion.
In the afternoon, attendees will be put to work designing the library of the future.
P.M. Session: Library of the Future Construction Kit In this workshop, groups working with the Construction Kit spreadsheet will design the services, collection strategies, space, and other aspects a library of the future under constraints of budget and space.
Groups will formulate a vision of the library they wish to create and then, using the spreadsheet, work through a series of choices to see the various trade-offs that are required to achieve their goals. The intent of the workshop is to encourage imaginative thinking about future possibilities, but to ground this thinking it the hard realities that will inevitably be faced.
